Princes Avenue VISTA Festival

On Saturday, 9 July, from 12-5. The Friends were there - and we welcome the new members who joined the Friends. We offered information about the developments planned for the Park - the bandstand, the bridge, the gates....

Join us - it's only £2 a year. We love the Park and we voice the concerns and compliments of the Park's users to the Trustees.

Heritage Lottery Fund Bid: Stakeholder engagement meetings (ie consultation):

The second stakeholder meeting was on Friday, 20 May, at 6pm, in the Conservatory.

We were pleased to learn that the Heritage Lottery people approve of the proposals to include a bandstand, a bridge across the lake at its narrowest point, and the restoration of the Park gates and arch. These features are all to be included in the Park's restoration and improvement works. The bandstand will be sited in what is now the rose garden. Its design is unique and so particularly attractive from a heritage viewpoint. The rose garden will become The Poetry Garden - a tribute to Philip Larkin and to the many Hull poets past and present.

The first stakeholder engagement meeting: on Tuesday 8 March 2016, at 6 pm, in the Conservatory in the Park.

Chair of the Park Trustees, Councillor John Fareham, and council officers including Carl Lewis (Parks for People Project Officer) were there to give us an update on the bid's progress and the work carried out so far.

Between 30-40 people were there, representing interest groups such as the Friends of Pearson Park, the Avenues & Pearson Park Residents' Association, and the Bowling Club.

We were able to examine the plans in detail, and put all our questions to the council team. People had many questions, which were answered carefully, and suggestions too, which were all noted.

There will be further meetings at intervals of 3-4 weeks

The bid itself will be submitted in the summer of 2016.

Notices of future meetings will be advertised to our members in good time, and will be displayed on the Community Noticeboards.

Our Tree Walk in the Park (on Thursday, 26 May)
About 30 people came along to our Tree Walk. The council's Urban Forestry Officer, Tim Beckley, back by popular request, lead us on this very informative walk. We learned a lot and asked a lot of questions. Thank you, Tim! We're going to arrange another Walk in the autumn.

PAST EVENTS

Christmas event in the Park - carols and Christmas lights

On Saturday, 13 December, from 12 noon to 5 pm the Trustees invited everyone to the Park to enjoy Christmas Lights and Carols around the Conservatory.

It was bitterly cold, and ice crackled on the lake. But a brass and woodwind band from Kelvin Hall played carols near Pennas Cafe, Hymers College Choir sang, and a pupil from the choir switched on the Park Christmas lights. There were children's fairground rides and hot food for sale. Stalls sold hand-made soft toys and other crafts and the Victoria Fountain group's stall offered a tempting array of cupcakes, hot punch, fountain mugs, postcards and tea towels.

The Friends of Pearson Park were selling Christmas cards showing the Park under a very heavy covering of snow. These were created by Susan Harr, and raised £32 for the Friends!

Our Night Walk on Wednesday, 24 September attracted about 30 adults and children. Our thanks to George King of Blackburn Leisure Astronomy for his illustrated talk on astronomy before the walk, and to John Robinson and the Trustees for giving us access to the Pavilion as our base.

We saw bats and later we looked through the astronomers' telescopes. It was a bit cloudy but we could see Saturn.

Thanks to Blackburn Leisure Astronomy and Hull & East Riding Astronomical Society for contributions to our Night Walks.

It would be great to see you at our meetings. We are now thinking about our future as an organisation and how we can best work in partnership with the Park Trustees and engage with the wider community. Do you have ideas on what the Friends should do and what sort of organisation we should be? Come and talk to us.
